Late Season Dressing Tips

Late summer/early fall dressing for riding can be a real pain.
It’s cool when the sun is down but hot when it’s up, how do you dress for that? That’s a rhetorical question because I’m going to tell you right now and it involves three of the most over looked and under appreciated clothing items a cyclist can own. Ready?
Arm warmers, knee warmers and a wind vest. Boom!
These three pieces are all you need for early or late day rides at this time of year. If,like me your rides tend to start early in the morning your regular cycling jersey with a pair of arm warmers and a vest, regular shorts and knee warmers provide the adde warmth you need before the sun really heats things up. Then, as your ride progresses and things get hot simply peel of your sleeves, knees and the vest, which will store easily in a jersey pocket, and continue on in comfort. Works all the time, everytime.
For afternoon evening jaunts, just start out with the gear in your pocket or pack and put it on as required. Again, these are all easily carried and can make your riding way more comfortable.
Our favourite arm and leg warmers, as you already know if you’ve been out with us lately, are the merino Woolie Boolie Armskins and Kneekers from Defeet. They’re made of 80% super soft Merino wool 19% nylon and 1% lycra and are machine washable. The cool thing about wool, beyond it’s incredible moisture wicking ability, is that it has these amazing thermal regulating properties that actually keep you cooler in warmer weather and warmer in cooler weather!. Don’t ask us how since we’re not scientist (I just play one on TV) just know that it’s true. Wool also maintains those thermal properties when it’s soaking wet which is good to have if you get stuck out in a rain or snow shower. We’re also big fans of the Woolie Boolie sock, year round, for all the same reasons plus it’s incredibly soft and comfortable. Oh, and for some reason wool doesn’t stink like man-made fabrics do. True story.
As for your vest choice, make sure it’s something that cuts the wind. Because you’re already generating so much heat you don’t really need a top layer that has insulating properties since that will just keep all your heat IN and cause you to over-heat. You just want something that will keep the wind from biting into you and cooling you down too quickly, that will just make you cold.
Our choice for this is actually a jacket that easily switches to a vest; Two pieces for the price of one. The Versa jacket from Sugoi.
